Portraits of a King

is a series dedicated to Osupaat, the dominant male of Olare Motorogi Conservancy in the Maasai Mara. Rather than documenting a single encounter, the work follows the same lion across different moments, revealing how presence is built through time rather than through a single photograph.

I first met Osupaat in 2022. That encounter changed the way I looked at wildlife photography. Four years later, I returned to the Mara for one reason: to find him again. I found him again. The same scar beside his left eye. The same unmistakable gaze. Older, but still in command of his territory.

The more I saw him, the more I realised that every encounter revealed something different. A glance.

A movement. A moment of silence before he stood and walked.

These photographs are not simply portraits of a lion. They are the portrait of an individual whose identity became clearer every time our paths crossed.

Olare Motorogi Conservancy,
Maasai Mara.

One lion. One individual. One territory.

First met in 2022.

Found again in 2026.

The same scar.
The same gaze.

Still in command.

Walking across the Plains.

Watching the horizon.

Resting above the land.

Every encounter reveals something different.

Not one portrait.

The same king.

Seen again.

The more I see you the more I stare at you.
