Under Mom’s Watch

One afternoon at Punda Kopjes, the pride rested among the granite outcrops while three lionesses kept watch over nearly a dozen playful cubs.

Full of curiosity and energy, the youngsters constantly wandered away to explore their surroundings before quickly returning to the reassurance of their mothers.

Lionesses allow their cubs to discover the world, but never without careful supervision.

Every step away from the pride is closely monitored, especially during the first months of life when the dangers are greatest.

Among the greatest threats is the arrival of a new coalition of males. Incoming lions frequently kill the cubs of their predecessors, allowing the lionesses to breed again and securing the future of the new dominant males.

This photograph captures one of those brief moments of growing independence, watched over by a mother whose attention never truly leaves her cub.
