Craig was one of Amboseli’s last great super tuskers, an extraordinary elephant whose tusks grew so long they almost reached the ground. For more than five decades he moved through the park’s swamps, woodlands and open plains, becoming one of Africa’s most recognised elephants and a symbol of successful conservation.
For several mornings, Craig remained hidden deep within the bush, never offering a clear view. After more than a year of planning this journey, the encounter finally came. Patiently waiting from a distance, we watched as he slowly emerged into the open, stepping into perfect light. It was a brief, unforgettable moment that rewarded days of persistence.
More than a portrait of an exceptional elephant, this photograph preserves the memory of an individual whose life became part of Amboseli’s history and whose legacy continues to define one of Africa’s greatest conservation stories.
