Long before arriving in Amboseli, this was one of the photographs I hoped to make. The daily crossings of the dry lake bed have been photographed for decades, but what drew my attention was not the herd itself. It was the youngest elephants, quietly learning the same routes their families have followed for generations.
On a clear morning, as another herd made its way towards the swamps beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, one calf remained tucked beneath its mother’s shoulder, carefully matching every step. At that age, calves rarely leave the protection of their mothers, learning not only where to go, but how to move safely within the family.
The image is a simple reminder that every great elephant begins by following another.
