Kabukojo

Kabukojo, the dominant silverback of the Rushegura family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda.

He took over the leadership of the group after the death of Mwirima in 2014. A powerful animal, immediately recognisable by the distinctive scar across his nose, he carries the responsibility of leading and protecting his family.

I wanted this portrait to be simply about him. His face, his strength, and that extraordinary direct gaze. Nothing else was needed.
