Against the Sky

Late one afternoon on the plains of Solio, a solitary male white rhinoceros paused beneath a sky filled with towering clouds. Photographed while crouching beside the vehicle, the low angle removed almost every distraction, allowing the animal to stand alone against the changing light of the African sky.

The final rays of the afternoon sun revealed every contour of its powerful silhouette, emphasising a shape that has remained largely unchanged for millions of years. Without the landscape to provide a sense of scale, the rhinoceros appears almost timeless, its silhouette revealing why it is often described as one of the last living links to a distant past.

Sometimes a change in perspective is all it takes to see a familiar animal in an entirely different way.
