In God’s Country

As the first light reached Punda Kopjes, a male lion and the same lioness he had been travelling with for days climbed onto the granite rocks. Their behaviour suggested they were in the mating period, rarely moving far from one another.

The lioness reached the highest point first, then stopped and turned. Moments later the male joined her. For just a few seconds they stood face to face, their tails perfectly aligned, before silently continuing in opposite directions. The entire encounter lasted no more than ten seconds.

Namiri Plains has a way of making time feel suspended. Standing among its ancient kopjes, with endless grasslands stretching to every horizon, it is easy to understand why this landscape feels like one of the last places on Earth where nature still exists much as it always has. It is, quite simply, God’s Country.
