Lost King Nyekundu

Nyekundu—The Red in Swahili—was the last lion we expected to photograph that evening. It was the end of the game drive in Olare Motorogi, and we stopped nearby as the sun began to set.

He was fast asleep, seemingly unaware of the fading light. Then, for just a few seconds, he slowly lifted his head, looked across the plains as if taking in the last moments of the day, and let the final golden rays illuminate his face. Moments later, he lay back down and returned to sleep.

It was a brief encounter I will never forget. A couple of years later, Nyekundu disappeared, and no one knows what became of him. Long live the king.
