By mid-morning, families of elephants begin crossing Amboseli’s dry lake bed on their daily journey towards the swamps that lie beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. The route has been followed for generations, linking the open plains with one of the park’s most important sources of water during the dry season.
Photographed from ground level, the experience extends far beyond what the image can show. Before the herd arrives, the earth begins to vibrate beneath you. Then comes the deep, surprisingly soft sound of several tonnes of animals moving across the dust. Sometimes they travel in single file, sometimes they spread into broader family groups like the one seen here.
The matriarchs lead the way while the youngest elephants remain protected at the centre of the herd, surrounded by the females that ensure their safety.
